AFGHAN WOMEN REIMAGINED – Empowering Afghan Women

Presenters: Mehre Dir mehre.dlir@gmail.com
& Debra Denker – swlight1@gmail.com

‌On the surface, the fall of Kabul into the Taliban’s rule has been disastrous for women’s rights. Hear what is being done with indominable visionaries to empower women to reimagine their best lives.

Mehre Dlir fled Afghanistan with her family after the 2016 attack and settled in Canada where she was able to finish her business degree. She has been active in the BC Federation of Students, organized a protest in support of Afghan refugee rights in Iran and successfully raised funds for Afghanistan Women Council. She currently works with the BC New Democratic Party. Her goal is to empower women around the world, especially in Afghanistan. She is a strong advocate for education, which she recognizes as a way to make the most impact.

‌Debra Denker is a writer, photographer, filmmaker, and humanitarian. She journeyed disguised as an Afghan woman into the war zone in 1983 and 1984. The latter trip was documented in the June 1985 National Geographic cover story on the war in Afghanistan and the impact of Afghan refugees on Pakistan. Her novel set during the 1980s Afghan-Soviet war, Love and War in the Land of Cain won first place in the 2022 National Federation of Press Women Communications Contest. She is the Senior Editor for Voices for Biodiversity and she has pursued multiple unorthodox careers in creative media and healing arts throughout her life.
